HIGH POINT MARKET FINDS: Gilt Logs, Furry Friends and The Five O'Clock Slipper Chair

One of the best things about being a decorator is getting a sneak peek at what's coming next in furniture and accessories.  After months of seeing the same old-same old, a visit to trade shows like the High Point Market in North Carolina--with more than 2000 exhibitors from over 100 countries and 10 million square feet of showroom space--shakes up my senses in the most delightful way.  Here's some of my fun and refreshing finds from the recent October Market.

My first discovery came moments after I landed at Greensboro Airport, where a display of metallic-coated Log Tables made of resin fiberglass cast from actual wood stumps caught my eye. Just love how Phillips Collection added a glamorous twist to something so rustic and real.

Next I came across The Five O'Clock Slipper Chair, a swanky velvet chair with a hidden slide-out surface on which to perch your cocktail.  Genius!  Since when designing a room we're always looking to mix the pretty with the practical--and always worried about where you'll put down your drink--it did not suprise me one bit that two former decorators designed this piece, along with a tightly edited collection of similarly surprising furniture.  Each piece by Carolina George has some kind of clever twist that elevates it from ordinary to unique.

At most of the showrooms, the presentation wows as much as the product, and I always come away with new display ideas.  The colorful book spines are one of Decorative Leather Books by-the-yard collections intended for retail displays and model or show homes.  But it's a clever DIY idea you could steal for your own library.

And finally, on my last day of the show, I ran into a furry new friend from Dreamweavers.  That little white lambskin pouf really needs a happy home.  And I think I might have just the very one ....

DUST & CHANDELIERS

Behind-the-scenes.
Before and afters.
Tips, tricks and pretty pics.
We'll be delving into decorating
(plus dollops of some other goodies)
all month on Style Maniac.

Why dust and chandeliers?
Because, as I like to say:
"Things usually have to get messy before they get pretty."

NOTE:  Dust & Chandeliers is also the name of a new blog I recently created for my decorating business, The Redecorators LLC, to offer an in-depth look at our projects and transformations.  If  you're crazy about decor, you might want to check it out.

5 FABULOUS SOURCES for VINTAGE FASHION

Wilbur Vintage, Philadelphia PA
Most of my vintage clothes and accessories come from my grandmothers, great-grandmothers--and one incredible afternoon at Couture Club in Chicago where, while visiting my good friend Beth, I happened across a store-wide everything-for-$50 sale of seriously gorgeous creations and bought so many of them I had to borrow a suitcase to haul it all home. As I made my way through the store, I kept holding up item after item--a silver and steel blue metallic brocade Victor Costa dress from the 60s; a 70s Lilli Ann knit maxi coat of flaming orange, red and black plaid with perfectly matched seams; a Cardinali fitted jacket and split skirt in thick boucle tweed of black and brown; a salt and pepper knit wool coat with silk lining and huge silver buttons; a hand-embroidered gold chinoiserie cape with intricate scenes of cranes and clouds--and asking the owner, "This is $50?  And this, this is $50? Really?" in a sort of upscale version of that dollar store commercial.  And he patiently looked at me and replied, "Yes."  Pretty sure that was the universe rewarding me for visiting Chicago in the dead of winter.

Although Couture Club is sadly gone, I have fortunately discovered some great spots in my hometown of Philadelphia. And of course, there's now the magical world of the internet.  Since I think fall and winter clothes hold up best over the decades, I thought I'd share some of my current fave sources for Vintage Fashion, along with contributions from some stylish readers.  Hope you discover a treasure of your own. (And if you have a terrific store you'd like to share, please add it in the Comments section below.)

Wilbur Vintage (top) and Retrospect, Philadelphia PA
In Philadelphia, Wilbur Vintage stocks an eclectic and colorful mix with a funky edge.  Around the corner, Retrospect, in a converted Blockbuster store on South Street, is a weekly stop for uncovering hip vintage clothes, furniture and accessories at retro prices.

Hip Replacements, Asheville NC

Stylish reader (and niece of Style Maniac) Cass says Hip Replacements is "very Asheville. Vintage clothes with a new age twist." Owner Franzi Charen notes that they specialize mostly in men's vintage and women's reproduction vintage (like Pinup Couture, Trollied Dolly and Heartbreaker). "Our mottos are: 'You can pull off anything as long as you rock it with confidence.' and 'Style is the soundtrack for your life.'"

Rethreads, Madison & Milwaukee, WI

Recent guest blogger Susan Gloss recommends Rethreads buy/sell/trade boutiques in Madison and Milwaukee.  "They are constantly updating their inventory by buying from customers, so you never know when you're going to go in and find that great DVF wrap dress or pair of Frye boots"

Dorothea's Closet Vintage, Des Moines IA

My new favorite online vintage source is Dorothea's Closet Vintage. Owner Angela Petraline has curated an incredible collection of elegant, superbly crafted and amazingly detailed clothes from the 1980s back to pre-1920s. Just look at that copper lining! that web-back! (perfect for an elegant Halloween bash). If you're lucky enough to live near Des Moines, Iowa, stop in to swoon and shop.

COCKTAIL SANDWICHES, ANYONE?

We've found the bag, the hat, the shoes and yet another sublime vintage dress ... now how about we go out for a cocktail sandwich?  Not a cocktail with a sandwich, but a cocktail that is a sandwich.  Or at least an alcoholic version of one.

When I first heard of Carnivorous Cocktails they did not appeal.  Images of Bloody Marys festooned with sausage and pickles danced in my head, and the salt overload made my eyes puffy just thinking about it.  But a recent podcast from The Splendid Table has me re-considering.  In the hands of a master mixologist, artisan ingredients carefully and creatively combined form a magical marriage.  Or so I hear.  Think I need to take a drive down to PX in Alexandria, VA to personally try Todd Thrasher's BLT Cocktail and then fly off to Nacional 27 in Chicago to taste Adam Seger's Iberico Ham with Cheese Swizzle.  Or at least find a version at one of  the swanky new speakeasies popping up in my town.  All in the name of research, dear stylish readers, all in the name of research.

FEATHERS & FELT ... hat sculpted by Tino Fonzarelli

While shopping for a decorating client, I discovered my salesman extraordinaire has another life as what I thought of as a couture milliner ... until he described it so much more poetically as a sculptor of felt.  Tino Fonzarelli's timeless-with-an-edge styles have graced runways and celebrity heads, including Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts and Marilyn Manson.  Formerly of Los Angeles, he now runs his business from Philadelphia. We're working on a behind-the-scenes peek at his studio and newest collection, but I simply couldn't wait to post this shot, the perfect addition to our fall fashion mix. Those lush and fiery feathers against that tactile wool felt and silky veiling ... a standout on its own yet a chic complement to the entire look ... and simply stunning.

THE CAT's MEOW

Something's going on between me and Kate Spade.  I've always loved her personal style, liked her designs and have bought a few items from her boutique over the years (including two of my favorite pieces of costume jewelry) ... but suddenly the past few seasons find myself completely smitten.  While still dreaming of those whimsical yet elegant Book of the Month Clutches, I came upon this faux fur leopard delight.  Upon inspection I found the Cat's Meow Maryanne Tote has all the makings of the perfect bag: lightweight, rests on the shoulder, lots of compartments, a contrasting, light-colored lining that makes it easy to find everything, metal feet for when it has to rest on the ground; and of course that timeless print that when done right works with virtually everything  and never goes out of style.  The only thing I don't like: the price {sigh}. But look at the lovely surprise I found in my Inbox this morning: a Kate Spade Friends & Family Fall Discount, offering 25% off any item today and tomorrow (10/15/2010 to 10/16/2010) only. Use code FALLFF10. For more details, see the website. Meow!

FALLING CLOUDBERRIES

I'll admit it:  I often buy books for their covers, even cookbooks.  Having once designed books, I appreciate the challenge of capturing the personality of the text and writer in just the glance of an eye.  And I figure if that much care is put into design, the content and editing should hopefully show the same.  So, yes, the lush image and pretty pattern of Falling Cloudberries captivated me first.  And then I opened it to discover inside an entrancing mix of memory and mouth-watering food.  Tessa Kiros' exotic family tree twines in branches from Finland to Greece to Cyprus to South Africa to Italy, a path that perhaps very few of us know.  But at its core is the influence of her heritage--her parents and grandparents--on her cooking and recipes.  In much the same way my own family tree has influenced my thoughts on home ... fashion ... style ... love ... life.

She's also written one wicked good fried potato and artichoke recipe.

STYLE MANIAC's NEW FALL WARDROBE

Perhaps you've noticed: Style Maniac has a whole new look for Fall.  And by Style Maniac I mean the blog! She's dressed for autumn, inspired by the fiery russet of a velvet jacket, leopard boots, bags and wallpaper, my favorite coffee cups and the touch of magenta in an October leaf.  Her signature yellow color now shows up as gold and toffee in the text links.   And she has a few lil treats for you: scrolling updates from Twitter, Facebook and the website; an extended list of Links I Love (both in sidebar), plus a showcase of great reader quotes (scroll down to footer for this clickable link).

And this is just the beginning.  Just as the blog posts--and my own home and wardrobe--celebrate the change of season, so will the blog design.  So, dear email & RSS subscribers, don't forget to click through every so often and enjoy the full pretty picture. And to all of Style Maniac's smart, fun and stylish readers: thank you for visiting, commenting and letting me share my mania day by day and season by season with you.

Special thanks to my friends Andrew & Lee.  Our recent Media Bistro Cocktails chat helped focus so many plans for this blog. Stay tuned ...

PUMPKIN LOVE

Time to head to a pumpkin patch (well, my city farmer's market) and attempt once again to carve a Jack-O'-Lantern.  Much as I love them, past attempts have not been much of a success.  Anyone have some tips and tricks to share?

WHAT TO EAT RIGHT NOW: Vanessa's Fried Cheese

Heavenly, gooey, crusty yumminess. I nearly drooled all over the computer screen when I came across this perfect fall treat from Vanessa Uttaro. Vanessa follows Style Maniac via Tumblr (the platform that hosts the website) and I'm so happy she does 'cause that led me to her amazing images of food, travel, vintage housewares and more. But mostly the food. Her recipe for this Fried Cheese couldn't be easier:
Olive oil
Queso fresco
Slice the cheese into squares or rectangles. Fry in olive oil, turning frequently once they begin to brown. Serve still-hot on crackers.
Or, my version:  forget the crackers, and your burning fingertips, and pop directly in your mouth.

THE THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT FALL

After a week of soaking rain and gloomy thoughts, I awake to a day that reminds me why I love Fall.  Brilliant sunshine, gleaming sky and air filled with the enticing mix of coolness and promise.  I head out into the city, perusing flea markets and partaking of festivals and think of all there is to come:  jack-o'-lanterns and crackling fires; goblins, ghosts and fashion shows; tailgates and road trips; barn sales and BLT cocktails; paisley wool shawls, suede leopard boots and chocolate leather totes; and perhaps a ramble down a country path, a halo of crimson, gold and orange dancing overhead.

YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY DRESS UP

Oh, and the other thing about fashion? It should be fun!
Happy Halloween.

That's Kevin and I as Big Bird & Tippi Hedren at the 2008 Second Street Halloween production of The Birds.  My theatrical neighbors stage the show, a loyal crew acts it out (Kevin's usually the monster), hundreds of kids show up to our city locale and the adults have as much fun as the kids.

FASHION FROM FOUR to FORTY(ish) to FOREVER

So, back in September, why did I feature this kooky get-up to kick off a fall fashion discussion? Well, for one, I like how the photo captures the fearlessness we had as kids to wear what made us happy. That fearlessness is easy to lose. As we get older we tend to start worrying about what other people think. And you know what? Most of the time "other people" are just thinking how great you look.

The other thing I take from that photo is how much my style hasn't changed. Black with shots of color (in the form of a scarf or one bold, over-the-top piece of jewelry) remains the basis of my wardrobe.  Add sunglasses and a fabulous coat (or killer pair of shoes) and I'm good to go. (The knit ski cap--not so much.)  It's a formula that's worked for years and it makes me happy.  It makes me feel good.  Which, to me, is what fashion should be about.

MEN IN PINK

Pink for girls, blue for boys. This color cliche so pervades our culture that when you glimpse a powerful, testosterone-fired pro football player leaping through the air to make a catch in hot pink gloves the incongruity makes you blurt out loud, "What the ---!?" And when you see both his teammates and opponents sporting hot pink sweatbands, cleats, even shoelaces, you sit up and really take notice. Thus the brilliance of the NFL's "A Crucial Catch" effort in support of breast cancer awareness, treatment and the fight for a cure. Look for splashes of pink on players, coaches, refs--even the goalposts--throughout the month of October. For more on what you can do to make sure you and those you love "celebrate another birthday" visit nfl.com.

ALWAYS IN STYLE

My favorite color for fall: Phillies Red! Congrats to my hometown team and defending world champs on their third straight NL East win. And hats off to Charlie for the classy move of giving Lidge the last out. (Actually, I like this color so much I've used it in my own home, courtesy M.A.B paints.)

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

A fascinating look at how crisp, decisive, and completely hands-on editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her earthy, passionate and funny creative director Grace Coddington produce the world's top fashion magazine--and in turn affect the global business of fashion. Featuring gorgeous couture clothes on the runway but surprisingly little glamour--or histrionics--off.

SHE'S BACK

Yes it's back to work, back to school and back to figuring out what the heck we're going to wear this fall. Join me for the ride ... and find out, amongst other things, why I chose this kooky photo of Style Maniac circa 1970s to kick off a fashion conversation.
