The magazine was started in 1974 by publishers Stuart Karl and Ron Guccione, cousin of Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione. Its name was then Nieuport magazine, a riff off "Newport." Over the next few years, the name changed several times, to Newport; Newport Life; and Orange Country, Newport Life.
